Deer rescued from trap in Sundarbans, poacher detained
The rescued deer was freed immediately after being removed from the trap
Forest guards have rescued a deer caught in an illegal trap in the Kachikhali Dimerchar area of the eastern Sundarbans and detained a suspected poacher in connection with the incident.
The rescue operation was carried out this afternoon (7 January), after which the deer was released back into the forest, according to the Forest Department.
Forester Md Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of the Kachikhali sanctuary centre under the Sharankhola range of the Eastern Forest Division, said forest patrols detected deer-hunting snares and found a chital trapped in a wire loop spread across a wide forest area in Dimerchar.
He added that during a subsequent search, guards managed to detain one man on the spot, while two others fled deeper into the forest.
The detained suspect was identified as A Hakim, 40, son of late Ali Fakir of Baraitala village in Patharghata upazila of Barguna.
Quoting the detainee, forest officials said the fleeing suspects were Russell, 30, and Dulal, 40, both from the Patharghata area.
Forest guards seized a large number of snares, scat traps and seven plastic bags from the scene.
Mizanur said the rescued deer was freed immediately after being removed from the trap.
A case would be filed against the suspect under the Forest Act, he said, adding that the suspect would be produced before a Bagerhat court.
