The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested six individuals in connection with the shooting and robbery of a gold trader in Banasree, Dhaka, last month.
The detectives had recovered 4.9 tolas of gold, Tk2.44 lakh in cash from sold gold, a 7.62mm revolver with four rounds of ammunition, and a motorcycle used in the robbery, DMP Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali said during a briefing at the DMP media centre today.
Based on intelligence, the DB officers arrested the suspects through a series of operations in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Barishal, Pirojpur, and Madaripur.
The arrestees are Md Kawsar, 31, Md Farhad, 64, Md Khalilur Rahman, 50, Md Suman, 30, Dulal Chowdhury, 43, and Aminul, 35.
Commissioner Sazzat stated that the robbery was meticulously planned. The gang held a preparatory meeting before carrying out the crime. One suspect was first arrested in Barishal, and his confession led to the arrest of the others.
He also mentioned that all the arrestees had previous records, with multiple robbery cases against them.
A senior DB official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Business Standard that the gang had surveyed the area for several days. The suspects operate both in Dhaka and outside, with members spread across various locations.
On the night of 23 February, Anwar Hossain, the owner of Alankar Jewellers, was shot and stabbed by six armed men on three motorcycles in front of his house in Banasree.
Anwar, returning home after closing his shop, was attacked when the gang attempted to rob him of 200 bhoris of gold and Tk1 lakh in cash.
He was shot once, and the assailants made off with the gold and money. Anwar was initially taken to nearby Farazy Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Anwar told the police that when he tried to resist the robbery, the men shot him and stabbed him before taking his belongings.
Rampura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Ataur Rahman Akand said that one of the robbers, wearing a red helmet, shot Anwar, while another stabbed him and robbed his valuables.
