Referendum can be introduced only through parliament after polls: Khasru
BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has said the interim government was formed and took oath under the current constitution, which has no provision for a referendum.
Speaking at a TRACE Consulting event today (8 November) at the InterContinental Dhaka, Khasru said the constitution has no provision for a referendum, adding that a referendum may be introduced later after passing it in parliament following elections.
He said that repeatedly taking to the streets over demands is not appropriate. If one goes to the field while the country's main political party holds programmes, it could lead to clashes, he added.
He noted that an authoritarian mindset has developed among political parties. "Many points of the BNP's 31-point agenda did not reach consensus, but that does not mean we will take matters to the streets or approach the public directly."
He added that decisions must stay within consensus and warned against forcing personal ideas on the public. Any changes should be made only after coming to power, he remarked.
