Hathazari Model Police have arrested 8 people today (3 September), in connection with the violent, two-day clashes between students of Chittagong University (CU) and local villagers.
The arrested individuals have been sent to court, with a request for a 10-day remand.
The arrested individuals are Md Imran Hossain, 35, Hasan, 22, Russel alias Kalo Russel, 30, Md Alamgir, 35, Md Nazrul Islam, 30, Md Zahed, 30, Md Arman, 24, and Md Didarul Alam, 46.
The arrests were made during an operation, confirmed Abu Mahmud Kawser Hossain, the officer-in-charge of Hathazari Model Police Station.
Sub-Inspector Rupun Nath of Hathazari Model Police Station said that "a special operation was conducted between 10pm and 12am. We arrested eight people during this time. The arrest operation is ongoing."
The conflict, which began over the weekend, was reportedly sparked by a dispute at a rented residence near the university's Gate No 2.
A female student was allegedly slapped by a guard for returning late, which escalated into a large-scale confrontation. Clashes occurred from 12pm to 4pm on Saturday and from 11am to 5pm on Sunday.
The violence resulted in injuries to approximately 400 to 500 students. Four were initially in critical condition and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), though two have since been moved to a regular ward after their condition improved.
In response to the incident, the university administration filed a case yesterday (2 September), against 98 named individuals from the Jobra area and an additional 1,000 unnamed individuals.
