A man died after collapsing and rolling on a road in the presence of police in Chattogram's Pahartali area, sparking widespread discussion and concern among locals and on social media.
The deceased was identified as Didarul Alam, 45.
A 36-second video circulating on social media shows Didarul shirtless, lying on the road and rolling on the ground while crying out.
In the footage, he can be heard pleading, saying: "Give me my mobile, give me money… I have never done anything in my life, sir… I have two children, sir." Police personnel are also seen at the scene in the video.
Contacted for comment, Khulshi Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahidul Islam denied allegations that police had conducted any operation targeting Didarul.
"We did not conduct any drive to arrest him. There are regular checkpoints in the area. Upon seeing the police, he suddenly started rolling on the ground," the OC said.
He added that Didarul had previously been accused in drug and murder cases.
"It is not confirmed whether he went there to consume or sell drugs. However, it is suspected that he chewed and swallowed yaba tablets he had with him," the OC said.
Following the incident, locals rescued Didarul and took him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. His family members later arrived at the hospital, but he eventually died while undergoing treatment.
Police said an unnatural death case has been filed with Khulshi Police Station, and the exact cause of death will be known after an autopsy.
