Two univ students held over HSC result forgery ploy

Two university students have been arrested in connection with their alleged involvement in forgery in public exam results, and swindling Tk3 lakh from examinees.

Both of the alleged, second-year-students of Jagannath University, were arrested on Wednesday midnight from the capital’s Sutrapur on a ‘special drive’ by a team of Cyber Security and Crimes Division (CSCD) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Saeed Nasirullah, senior assistant commissioner at the CSCD, revealed the information to The Business Standard on Thursday.

The duo — Murad Hasan, a student at the department of Psychology, and Partho Sarkar, a student at the department of Statistics, have been arrested after victims complained against them through the CSCD official Facebook page, said Nasirullah.

They were engaged in a trick to obtain money fraudulently from examinees by making false commitments to change their HSC results, published on Wednesday.

“After results were published, we started getting complaints against the two from victims who were put on hold on false commitment to make their results better,” said Nasirullah.

During primary interrogation, both the convicted confessed their crime, he said.

They also claimed during interrogation, they were capable of making any exam result better, the DMP official said, adding that they will be further questioned with the aim to find out whether anyone from any of the Education Boards have been involvement in the crime.

“If anyone from any of the Education Boards is found to be involved with the two Jagannath University students in result forgery, we will take necessary steps against them as per law,” Nasirullah said.

The scamsters was taken to the CSCD custody for further interrogation after a Dhaka court on Thursday granted the DMP unit to put the duo on a two-day remand.

How they trapped examinees

Saeed Nasirullah said both Murad and Partho, residing at Koltabazar under Sutrapur, claimed to have been cheated in the same way by a gang of impostors after their HSC exam results had been published.

So, they also planned to earn money from examinees in a similar fashion. They opened several fake IDs on Facebook to lure clients.

They posted on their Facebook walls an offer to change public exam results in exchange for money. They offered several “packages”, including “One Subject,” “Pass Package,” and “GPA 5”.

Through this, the scamsters collected Tk3 lakh from different college students via bKash and other mobile financial services.

But when the HSC results got published, the examinees found that their results did not come as per the commitment.

After that, Murad and Partho switched off their mobile phone numbers and went off the Facebook.

The victims, upon failing to contact the fraudsters, complained against them to the CSCD through its Facebook page.
