Popular television actor Azadur Rahman Azad was shot and injured by unidentified assailants at his residence in Ashulia this morning (23 February).

His mother and wife were also injured in the attack, according to family members.

Azad is currently under treatment at a hospital in Uttara, the actor's sister Afrina Akhter confirmed to The Business Standard.

The incident took place in the Jirabo area of Ashulia on Saturday night (22 February).

According to family members, the incident took place around 2:45am when Azad, who was staying on the third floor of his house, heard noises coming from the second-floor kitchen and went to look into it.

"As soon as he opened the kitchen door, Azad was shot in the leg. When his sister-in-law and mother went there, they were also beaten. There were three people in the kitchen. Later, the miscreants fired 10-15 more rounds and fled the scene," said Afrina.

She, however, could not provide any insight into the identities of the attackers.

Mir Yakub Ali, the husband of the actor's younger sister, said Azad was hit by two bullets in his left leg and one in his right leg.

Meanwhile, contacted over the matter, Md Nur Alam Siddique, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station, said two attackers had entered the kitchen by cutting the window grill.

"As the family became aware, the assailants shot Azad three times in the legs. They also hit his wife with a cooking pan before fleeing," he said.

"Police visited the scene immediately after being informed of the incident, but we have not received a written complaint yet. Our investigation is ongoing," OC Siddique added.
