Student suffers kidney damage after being ‘beaten up’ by cops
The victim alleges police officials hit him indiscriminately and planted cannabis upon him to brandish him as a “drug peddler”
A college student in Jashore Sadar upazila has reportedly suffered kidney damage and is undergoing treatment at a hospital after allegedly being beaten up indiscriminately by some police officials.
Imran Hossain, 21, a student of Kazi Nazrul Degree College of the upazila was taken to the hospital after complaining of abdominal pain.
Dr Ubaidul Qadir, a kidney specialist at Jashore Medical College Hospital, said Imran's condition was very critical as both of his kidneys were severely damaged. "As he needs immediate dialysis, we set to perform dialysis today," he added.

Injured Imran alleged that some cops at Sajiali police outpost hit him indiscriminately and planted some cannabis upon him to brandish him as a 'drug peddler' on Wednesday.
He said, "When I along with a neighbor reached Ambattala in front of Jashore University of Science and Technology, some police members of Sajiali outpost stopped us. Then they started searching the bag of my accomplice.
"Being scared, I tried to run away, but police officials caught me and started beating me up."
Imran added that he had lost his consciousness after being beaten up heavily and that police officials later called his (Imran) father and released him taking Tk6,000.
Imran's mother Bulbuli Begum exclaimed, "How someone can torture a boy in this way that his both kidneys are damaged!"
"How will we ensure medical treatment for him? I don't know if he will survive," she said.
Meanwhile, Imran's father Nikar Ali demanded that police members involved in the incident are punished. "I want justice from the Prime Minister," he said.
Munshi Anisur Rahman, in-charge of Sajiali outpost, said ASI Samresh Saha and ASI Sajdar Rahman and four constables detained the college student. But as he was sick, they bailed him out after first aid.
ASI Shamresh said, "When we stopped an easy-bike (battery-run three wheelers) at the check-post, Imran ran away. Being informed that a boy fell into the water; police rescued him with 10 grams of cannabis. He was not beaten up. As per request from the local union parishad member, he was released at night. But no money was taken for his release."
Jashore Superintendent of Police Mohammad Ashraf Hossain said he had launched an investigation into the incident. "Strict action will be taken if any policeman is found to be involved in the incident," he added.
