The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested the special representative of ex-mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh in a case filed over allegations of murder during the July uprising.

The accused was identified as SM Kamal Haider, who was known as the special representative of former mayor Taposh, said a press release.

CID's Dhaka Metropolitan (South) Division made the arrest during a drive in the capital early today (15 May), said the release.

According to the release, a protester named Abdullah Siddique was killed after gunshots were fired in front of Patam Restaurant beside the lake in Dhanmondi 3/1 on 4 August 2024.

Later, a murder case was lodged with Dhanmondi Police Station, which was handed over to CID's Dhaka Metro (South) Division, said the release.

CID found proof of Kamal's involvement after analysing the witness accounts, CCTV footage and other information. Based on a tip-off, they conducted a drive and arrested Kamal today, the release added.

A process is underway to present the arrestee before the court, while investigations are also ongoing to bring the other accused under the law based on sufficient proof, the press release further said.
