A son has been arrested in Narayanganj's Sonargaon after a video of him and his brother beating their 70-year-old father over selling a house went viral on social media.

Abdur Rahim, the 70-year-old victim, filed a case against his children at Sonargaon Police Station.

Police later arrested one of his sons, Zahirul Islam, during a raid. He has been sent to jail by the court, said Sonargaon Police Station OC Mofizur Rahman.

Rahim was severely injured after being beaten by his children in the Asharhiyachar area of Pirojpur union in Narayanganj's Sonargaon yesterday (27 April).

The father was kicked to the ground and beaten bloody by his sons Zahirul and Saiful Islam, and daughter Halima Akter.

When the video of the abuse spread on social media, it caused a storm of criticism.

In the published video, it can be seen that Rahim's children were publicly beating him on the road in front of their house as their neighbours recorded the incident.

Locals said Rahim remarried after the death of his first wife. Family conflicts began after the marriage.

Recently, Rahim decided to sell their house, which created resentment among his children.

Yesterday afternoon, they asked their father why he sold the house. As the argument escalated, Rahim's two sons and daughter beat him in front of the house, leaving him injured, said the locals.

When locals came forward upon hearing Rahim's screams, the three siblings fled the scene.

Later, he was admitted to Sonargaon Upazila Health Complex in a serious condition.

"This is the first such disgraceful incident in our village. As residents of this village, we are ashamed that the video of such an incident has spread on social media. They [the children] should be brought to justice," said Abdul Jalil, organisational secretary of Pirojpur Union BNP and a local.

The arrested son, Zahirul, said they will have nowhere to live if the house is sold. So, he requested his father not to sell the house.

Due to anger at his father not listening to the request, he committed such an act. He said he and his siblings are remorseful for beating their father.
