Six reported brokers were jailed today (27 May) for defrauding customers at the Dhaka Metro Circle-3 office of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) in Diabari, Uttara of the capital.
Each of them confessed to their crimes in court, and consequently, they were sentenced to three months in prison during a mobile court drive at the BRTA office by the BRTA authorities with the help of the Bangladesh Army, reads a press statement.
The jailed individuals are Md Farhad Ali (32), son of Abu Taleb; Md Hasanuzzaman Khan (35), son of Md Mannan Khan; Md Liton (35), son of Haji A Malek; Md Tuhin (32), son of Korban Ali; Md Jewel (36), son of Anwar Hossain; Sohel Rana (31), son of Ali Ahmed.
Other members of the fraudulent group managed to escape during the raid, the press statement adds.
Executive Magistrate Md Anisuzzaman stated, "This fraudulent group deceived visitors by promising quicker processing and then absconding with their documents and money."
He emphasised that the crackdown on brokers and fraudsters will continue in the future.
He also advised citizens visiting the BRTA office to approach official BRTA staff directly for faster and secure service.
Citing officials, it said the joint operation by BRTA and the Bangladesh Army will continue to ensure that the office remains free of brokers.
This initiative aims to make the office free of brokers, ensuring that services are provided directly to citizens without intermediaries.
