Police detained a Rohingya youth over allegations of attempting to rape a Chakma girl in Cox's Bazar's Ukhiya upazila today (20 April).

The incident took place around 9:30am in the Telakhola Pahari area of ​​Palangkhali union, said Ukhiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muhammad Arif Hossain.

The youth has been identified as Saidul Islam, 28, a resident of D-4 block of Rohingya Camp No-11 in Ukhiya.

Quoting locals, Palangkhali Union Parishad's Ward No-6 member Kamal Uddin said the  youth tried to rape the girl in a secluded hilly area near Bulerjhiri.

People from nearby areas heard the girl's screams and managed to detain the youth, he added.

Later, a police team visited the scene and took him to the station, he further said. 

The victim's family is preparing to file a case against the accused, OC Arif said.
