Rohingya community leader hacked to death in Cox’s Bazar camp

A Rohingya community leader was hacked to death by unidentified people in Cox's Bazar's Ukhiya Rohingya camp last night (5 March).
The incident took place at around 8:30pm at Block M-32 of Camp 20 in Ukhiya upazila, confirmed Additional Deputy Inspector General (ADIG) Mohammad Siraj Amin, commander of the 14th Armed Police Battalion (APBn).
The deceased, Nur Mohammad, 30, was the chief "Majhi" (community leader) of the camp and son of Abu Sayeed from the same block.
Citing locals, the APBn official said Nur Mohammad was returning home from a grocery shop owned by Mozammel Haque when a group of four to five unidentified attackers ambushed him near the house of a man named Tayeb. The attackers hacked him with sharp weapons and fled the scene, leaving him dead on the spot.
"After the Tarawih prayers, locals found his body and informed the police. A police team later arrived at the scene and recovered the body," he said, adding that the victim had multiple stab wounds on his face and neck.
The APBn official mentioned that Nur Mohammad had survived a similar attack last year during Ramadan.
"Preliminary investigations suggest that the killing might have been driven by previous enmity," he said.
However, police are conducting operations to identify and arrest those involved while also investigating the motive behind the killing, he added.
The body has been sent to Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
