Police from Mohammadpur Police Station have arrested Md Golam Mostakim Rinku, the man accused of harassing and inciting a mob that led to the physical assault of two women in Dhaka's Lalmatia area on 1 March.
He was arrested from an area under the police station on the afternoon of 10 March, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Deputy Commissioner (DC - Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman in a press release today (11 March).
The press release stated that, according to sources from Mohammadpur Police Station, on the evening of 1 March, two young women were smoking at a tea stall in front of Boys High School and College in Lalmatia Housing Society, Mohammadpur. While passing by, Rinku publicly told them to stop smoking, which led to an argument between them.
At one point, Rinku misbehaved with the two women and attempted to physically assault them. This caused tension in the area, and over a hundred people gathered at the scene, as per the release.
Upon receiving the news, a patrol team from Mohammadpur Police Station arrived and brought the situation under control, it added.
It further stated that legal action is being taken against the arrested individual.
Meanwhile, addressing a press briefing at the DMP Media Centre at Minto Road, DC Talebur said Rinku has been shown arrested under Section 54 of The Code of Criminal Procedure.
He said that Rinku was detained yesterday afternoon (10 March). "Today, he has been sent to court. The process of filing a case on behalf of the victims is underway. If a case is filed, he will be shown as arrested in that case."
The matter of Rinku's detention came to light yesterday after Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki in a Facebook post made the announcement, saying, "The Lalmatia harasser Rinku was arrested last night (9 March)."
On the same day, DMP Deputy Commissioner (Tejgaon Division) Ibne Mizan also confirmed to The Business Standard that Rinku was taken into custody at the Mohammadpur Police Station in connection with the Lalmatia incident.
The 1 March incident in Lalmatia, where two women were attacked for smoking in public, sparked outrage after a video of the incident went viral on social media, prompting demands for action against the perpetrator.
