Raozan killing sparks road blockade with deadbody
Demonstrators demanded the immediate arrest, public trial and maximum punishment of the killers.
Relatives and locals today (25 April) blocked the Chittagong-Rangamati road in Raozan with the body of a youth killed by suspected criminals, demanding justice and the swift arrest of those involved.
The blockade began around 3:30pm at Charabattala and continued until 4:30pm, when protesters withdrew following assurances from the administration.
Kawsaruzzaman Bablu, 35, was shot dead by unidentified assailants around 3am on Friday in the Jungle Raozan BMO Brick Field area. A resident of Dalar Muk area under ward no-9 of Raozan municipality, he worked as a labourer, farmer, and local supplier of sand and bricks.
Placing the body-laden ambulance and a cot in the middle of the road, protesters brought traffic to a halt, creating long tailbacks on both sides. Hundreds of vehicles were stranded, causing severe suffering for commuters. People of different ages, including women, joined the protest.
Demonstrators demanded the immediate arrest, public trial and maximum punishment of the killers. They also urged the government to take responsibility for supporting the victim's family. Protesters said repeated killings in Raozan without effective justice have emboldened criminals, warning of tougher action if arrests are not made soon.
Raozan assistant commissioner (land) and municipality administrator Aungshing Marma spoke to protesters at the scene. "This death is unfortunate. Legal action will be taken against those involved. Measures will be taken to support the victim's family," he said.
Police said no case had been filed until 7pm today.
Family members said Bablu had faced multiple attacks over the past two years, though they could not specify the cause of the disputes. He is survived by two daughters aged around 12 and two, and was the sole earner of the family.
Raozan police OC Sazedul Islam said a drive to arrest those involved has begun. "Three to four criminals may be linked to this killing. The victim worked as a source for various forces. We are investigating the matter," he said.
Since the political change on 5 August, at least 20 people have been killed in Raozan over political rivalry, dominance and extortion, raising concern over the deteriorating law and order situation.
