Police couple arrested in Khulna over abusing housemaid

A police couple have been arrested in Khulna in a case filed over physical abuse of their housemaid.
The arrested duo are Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sanjoy Kumar Sarkar and his wife, ASI Popy Rani Saha of Sonadanga Police Station.
The victim's mother, Minoti Rani Das, filed a case against them this morning (18 June).
Confirming the matter, Sonadanga Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Rafiqul Islam said the victim, Milon Das, 22, daughter of Akhil Chandra, a resident of Monohardi upazila in Narsingdi, had been working at the police officer's residence for the past five years.
The victim was rescued from the house after being informed and taken to a victim support centre, while her family later arrived in Khulna and filed the case, the OC added.
He also said ASI Sanjoy has been sent to court, while his wife, Popy Rani, is currently receiving treatment at the prison cell of Khulna Medical College Hospital.
Earlier yesterday afternoon (17 June), ASI Popy beat the victim after vegetables were burnt while cooking. She also burned Milon with a hot frying pan, and a video of the incident later went viral on social media.
Rabiul Gazi Ujjal, a journalist, said he recorded the incident from a distance while attending a seminar at Khulna Solar Park last afternoon.
He later found out the abuse was triggered by the burnt vegetables and reported the matter to the police.
