Munia murder case: PBI submits final report seeking Anvir’s exemption

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has submitted the final report to the court seeking exoneration of Bashundhara Group MD Sayem Sobhan Anvir in a case filed over the suicide of college student Mosarat Jahan Munia.

PBI Inspector, also investigating officer of the case, Golam Muktar Ashraf Uddin submitted the final report to the court of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate last week.

In the report, the investigating agency sought to clear all the eight accused, including the Bashundhara Group MD, of the charges.

Jashim Uddin, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DC-prosecution division), confirmed the development to The Business Standard on Wednesday.

"According to the PBI report, evidence of murder could not be found in the case. She died by suicide. So, the PBI has submitted the final report in the case, seeking exoneration of all accused," he said.

The IO of the case Golam Muktar Ashraf Uddin said, "We have evidence that the two [Anvir and Munia] had a relationship. But nothing was forced as per our findings.

"As it is not considered rape according to the country's law, I submitted the final report in the case," he added.

Nusrat Jahan Tania, the plaintiff of the case, however, told the media that she did not know about the submission of the final report.

After filing the case, the IO did not quiz her and did not inform her about the final report submission.

"I will file a no-confidence petition against the PBI report," she added.

Police recovered Munia's body from a flat in the capital's Gulshan area on 26 April this year.

She reportedly died by suicide. On 27 April, Nusrat, elder sister of Munia, filed a case against Anvir, who had a relation with Munia, on allegation of "abetment of suicide."

During three months of investigation, the police did not detain or interrogate Anvir in the case.

Then, on 19 July, police submitted the final probe report over Munia's death, dropping the name of the lone accused. The court also accepted the charge sheet in that case on 18 August.

Nusrat Jahan filed the case with Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8 against eight people on 6 September.

The other accused include Bashundhara Group Chairman Ahmad Akbar Sobhan, his wife Afroza Sobhan and Anvir's wife Sabrina, Sharmin, Saifa Rahman, Fariya Mahbub and Ibrahim Ahmed.
