Operation Devil Hunt Phase 2: 1,043 arrested, 6 weapons recovered nationwide in 2 days
The operation was initiated yesterday amid concerns over public security ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary election, particularly after the shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi.
Joint forces have arrested 1,043 people and recovered six weapons across the country in the first two days of nationwide special drive titled "Operation Devil Hunt Phase-2," launched to control the law and order situation and recover illegal arms.
Police Headquarters' Assistant Inspector General (Media and PR) AHM Shahadat Hossain confirmed the matter to The Business Standard today (15 December).
The operation began yesterday evening following a decision taken at a law and order core committee meeting of the Ministry of Home Affairs. Police units and the army jointly started the drive the same night.
The operation was initiated amid concerns over public security ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary election, particularly after the shooting of Sharif Osman Hadi, a potential independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency.
At the core committee meeting held at the Secretariat yesterday, Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said law enforcement agencies were already conducting drives to recover looted and illegal weapons.
To further intensify those efforts and suppress criminal activities, the committee decided to immediately launch Operation Devil Hunt Phase-2, he added.
Previously, the government launched the nationwide security operation, titled "Operation Devil Hunt", on 8 February following a violent attack - allegedly carried out by people loyal to the previous Awami League regime - on students and civilians in Gazipur on 7 February.
