One dead, 10 injured in Brahmanbaria turf war
Police recover firearm, five rounds of ammunition and five cocktails from the scene.
One person was killed, and at least 10 others were injured in a clash between two groups over local dominance in Brahmanbaria's Bancharampur early today (28 September).
The deceased was identified as Juel Mia, 25, son of Sentu Mia of Gopinathpur village in Niloksha Union of Narsingdi's Raipura upazila. He was reportedly involved in the clash on behalf of the Moktar group.
The clash broke out around 4am in Shantipur village under Sonaramour Union of Bancharampur, police and locals said.
The injured, whose identities were not immediately known, received treatment locally.
Police recovered a locally made firearm, five rounds of ammunition and five cocktails from the scene.
According to police and local residents, a long-standing dispute over local dominance has existed between Moktar Hossain and Momen, with Momen's group currently holding influence in the village.
In an attempt to drive Momen's supporters out of the area and establish control, members of Moktar's group engaged in a clash with them early in the morning, they said.
Moktar allegedly brought people from neighbouring Raipura in Narsingdi to take part in the clash.
Juel was killed after being struck by a spear during the confrontation, while at least 10 people from both sides were injured.
Bancharampur police station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Yasin said Moktar's group wanted to drive Momen's supporters out of the village to establish dominance, leading to the clash.
"Members of the Moktar group wanted to drive Momen group's people out of the village to establish their dominance. That is why the two sides clashed," he said.
He added that Juel had taken part in the clash on behalf of the Moktar group.
"Police recovered a firearm, five rounds of ammunition and five cocktails from the scene. Necessary legal action is being taken in this regard," the OC said.
