Masked group 'attempts robbery, extortion' at car showroom in Dhaka

A group of unidentified individuals allegedly attempted to rob and extort money from a car showroom in the capital's Rokeya Sarani today (1 March).
CCTV footage from the showroom shows a group of youths, masked and brandishing sticks and stamps, entering the showroom this afternoon.
"They tried to snatch some valuables. But they couldn't," Abdul Mokter, owner of the showroom, told The Business Standard.
The group belongs to a local mugging gang, he added.
Masum, manager of the showroom, said the group also vandalised a part of the showroom and demanded extortion money on behalf of a certain group. But the manager didn't agree to reveal the group's name.
When asked, Jewel Rana, additional deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Tejgaon Division, said the police are looking into the matter.
The showroom is hardly 300 metres away from the Tejgaon Police Station and within 100 metres of Khamarbari and Chandrima Udyan police boxes.
"It's not a remote place... the incident is alarming," Mokter said.
