Man sentenced to death nearly a decade after Ctg child murder

A court in Chattogram today (28 July) sentenced a man to death nearly a decade after the murder of seven-year-old Mahfuz in the city's Halishahar area.
The court also sentenced him to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for concealing evidence and disposing of the child's body.
Judge Nishaduzzaman of the Second Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court in Chattogram delivered the verdict, confirmed Court bench assistant Md Shahidul Islam.

The convict, Md Al Amin, 44, is the son of late Jinnat Ali from Karpasha Putihara area of Nikli upazila in Kishoreganj.
According to the court, Al Amin was sentenced to death and fined Tk25,000 under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
He was also sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk5,000 under Section 201 of the Penal Code for concealing evidence and removing the body. In default of paying the fine, he will serve an additional two months of simple imprisonment.
According to case documents, Mahfuz was strangled to death with a towel as part of a pre-planned murder on the morning of 5 September 2016 in the Golidhipapara Toll Road area under Halishahar Police Station jurisdiction.
The accused later dumped the child's body into a canal near the embankment in an attempt to conceal the crime, according to the prosecution.
Following the incident, victim's father Md Mahabub filed a murder case with Halishahar Police Station.
After investigation, police submitted a charge sheet before the court, and charges were framed against Al Amin on 27 April 2017.
The court delivered the verdict after examining the statements of 12 witnesses and other evidence presented during the trial.
