A man, who was apprehended by the police on Tuesday (18 March) night over an alleged rape of a five-year-old child, was critically injured in a mob attack at the Khilkhet area in the capital.

After the police apprehended the 17-year-old suspect and were taking him to the station, he was snatched from the police vehicle and attacked by an angry mob, Khilkhet Police Station Duty Officer Sub-Inspector Ismail Hossain told The Business Standard.

Police attempted to disperse the crowd, who then vandalised and attacked the police vehicle in front of Mannan plaza of Khilkhet bazar area.

The police official further said the identity of the youth could not be confirmed immediately.

Police officer Ismail said at one stage, the angry mob also attacked the police members present there.

Five people were injured in the incident, including Inspector (Investigation) of Khilkhet Police Station Ashikur Rahman Ashiq, he added.
