Man killed in shooting during clash between rival groups in Teknaf Rohingya camp
Kamal was shot and also sustained injuries from sharp weapons.
A man was killed after being shot during a clash between two rival groups over dominance in a Rohingya camp in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar.
The incident occurred around midnight on Friday (9 January) at Block I of Nayapara Registered Rohingya Camp-26 under Hnila union in Teknaf upazila, said Md Kawsar Sikder, additional deputy inspector general (ADIG) and commanding officer of the 16 Armed Police Battalion (APBn).
The deceased was identified as Nur Kamal, 25, a resident of the same camp.
According to police, Kamal was a listed criminal and had formed his own gang involved in various criminal activities in and around the Rohingya camps. Quoting locals, the ADIG said Kamal's group and a rival group led by Khaleq had long been at odds over control of the camp, which led to an exchange of gunfire and clashes late Friday night.
"Members of the APBn rushed to the spot after receiving information about the clash, but the assailants had fled by the time they arrived," he said.
Police are working to identify and arrest those involved, ADIG said, adding that initial information points to a dispute over control of the camp, though the exact cause will be confirmed after investigation.
The body has been sent to Cox's Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, he added.
Earlier, during the violence, Kamal was shot and also sustained injuries from sharp weapons. He was taken to a clinic inside the Rohingya camp, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
