A man has been detained in Munshiganj's Gazaria upazila after being accused of attempting to rape a five-year-old child.
The incident took place around 10am today (8 June) in Noyakandi village of Bhaborchar union.
Locals detained the accused, identified as Monju, 33, an employee of a local restaurant, and later handed him over to the police. He was reportedly beaten by residents before police arrived.
Confirming the incident, Gazaria Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Firoz Miah told The Business Standard that police detained the accused after receiving information from locals.
"He has been sent to the hospital for medical treatment. Legal action will be taken in this regard after discussing with the higher authorities," he added.
According to police and local sources, the child was standing in front of a tube-well next to her house in Noyakandi village. At this time, while passing by that path, Monju went near the child under the pretext of drinking water, grabbed her, and inappropriately touched her.
When the child's mother saw the matter and screamed, people from the surrounding areas rushed to the spot. The agitated locals then beat him up.
However, denying the allegation, the accused Monju claimed that he was out on a walk in the village and he had only asked the child her name upon seeing her.
He claimed that he was not involved in any unethical act, and the locals started beating him up just for talking to the child.
