Maheshkhali Kanunga in ACC custody, Tk2.5 lakh confiscated

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Monday conducted a drive at the office of the Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Maheshkhali, Cox's Bazar and arrested the Kanunga-in-charge Abdur Rahman and confiscated Tk2.5 lakh.

Mahbub Alam, the deputy director of the ACC, Chattogram, who led the drive, said, "Kanunga Abdur Rahman harassed Sekender Badshah when he went to his office for registering a land in Noyapara."

He asked for Tk20,000 from him in return for registering the land. Sekender informed it to the ACC, he added.

The ACC team went to the office on Monday and questioned Kanunga Abdur Rahman regarding the bribe in front of victim Sekender Badshah.

Humayun Kabir, deputy director of the ACC, filed a case against Abdur Rahman on Monday.

Local sources said Maheshkhali has been an important economic zone as a part of different development projects of the government, and the government officers and brokers of the land office have been involved in unbridled corruption.

Many of the brokers went on hiding after the raid by the ACC on Monday.
