Lawyer Alif murder: Fugitive accused Shri Ganesh arrested
He was arrested yesterday evening during a special operation
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-7) has arrested a fugitive accused in the widely discussed murder case of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, who was killed inside the Chattogram court premises.
The accused, Shri Ganesh, 19, was arrested yesterday evening (10 January) from the Zila Parishad Super Market area beside Laldighi Court Road under Kotwali Police Station in Chattogram city. He is the son of Sherip Prokash Sharif Dash of Sebak Colony under Kotwali thana.
Confirming the arrest, RAB-7 Assistant Director (Media) ARM Mozaffar Hossain said Ganesh was detained around 6:20pm during a special operation and later handed over to Kotwali police for further legal action.
RAB-7 said it had been conducting intelligence surveillance since the filing of the case to identify and arrest those involved. Based on intelligence information, the force learned that the accused fugitive was staying in the Kotwali area.
The murder took place on 26 November, 2024, following the rejection of bail for Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari in a sedition case. After the bail denial, violence broke out inside the Chattogram court premises, with vandalism reported.
During the unrest, lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was attacked on Rangam Convention Hall Road under Kotwali Police Station. According to case records, he was hacked and beaten to death by followers of Chinmoy Das using sticks, bricks, machetes, and sharp weapons.
The killing sparked widespread outrage across the country.
Following the incident, the victim's father filed a murder case with Kotwali Thana, naming 31 accused and 10–15 unidentified persons.
