No arrests have been made so far
A case has been filed over the killing of Shamim Reza Jahangir, revered by his followers as a Pir or spiritual leader, two days after he was beaten to death and his shelter set on fire in a mob attack in Kushtia's Daulatpur upazila.
The case was filed at Daulatpur Police Station around 10pm yesterday (13 April) by the victim's elder brother, Fazlur Rahman, said Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Ops) Faisal Mahmud.
According to police, Rajib Dafadar, 32, son of Gazi Dafadar, has been named as the prime accused in the case, along with 200 unnamed individuals.
Speaking to The Business Standard, ASP Faisal Mahmud said that although the case has been filed, no arrests have been made so far.
The incident occurred on Saturday (11 April) in Philipnagar area of Daulatpur, where hundreds of agitated locals allegedly attacked a darbar sharif, accusing Shamim of making offensive remarks about the Quran and Islam.
The attackers reportedly vandalised the premises and set parts of it on fire. Shamim died in the attack, while at least seven of Jahangir's followers were reportedly injured.
Police said a tense situation continues to prevail in the area following the incident. Additional law enforcement personnel have been deployed to maintain order.
