KNF uniforms seized from Ctg garment factory, 3 arrested
Army terms it very serious matter and is thoroughly investigating it
Law enforcers recovered 20,300 uniforms, allegedly for the armed hill rebel group Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF), during a raid at a garment factory located in the Nayarhat area under the Bayezid Bostami police station of Chattogram on 17 May.
During a visit to the factory, Ringvo Apparels, yesterday this correspondent found 10,000 more uniforms, as counted by workers.
Three individuals, including the factory owner, Shahedul Islam, were arrested over the incident. The other two – Golam Azam and Niaz Haider – had placed the order for the uniforms.
According to case documents obtained by The Business Standard, Sub-Inspector Iqbal Hossain of the city's Detective Branch filed the case with the Bayezid Bostami police station on 18 May.
"Golam Azam and Niaz Haider placed the uniform order in March, allegedly acting on behalf of a man named Monghlasin Marma alias Mong. The deal was reportedly worth Tk2 crore," reads the case statement.
Kazi Mahfuz Hasan Siddique, an inspector (investigation) of the police station, told TBS yesterday, "Police are looking into the case and conducting drives to arrest all the suspects involved in the case."
Army's concern
Brigadier General Md Nazim-ud-Daula, director of the Directorate of Military Operations at the Army Headquarters, during a media briefing in Dhaka yesterday, said the army took the matter very seriously and is thoroughly investigating it.
"The KNF represents the Kuki community, which has a population of around 12,000. So, why were 30,000 uniforms being produced? What's the truth behind this and who's involved? The army is taking this matter very seriously and is thoroughly investigating it," he said.
