A leader of the Jatiotabadi Jubodal, the youth wing of the BNP, was caught red-handed during an attempt to hijack a battery-run autorickshaw in Munshiganj last night (21 April).
The arrestee has been identified as Samrat alias Babu Mizi (36), joint convener of Munshiganj Sadar Jubodal, according to police and the district BNP.
During the arrest, police also seized a knife, four crude bombs, and two phones from Mizi, Superintendent of Munshiganj Police MD Firoz said in a press statement issued today.
Mizi, son of Monir Mizi of Torki area, has been sued on charges of attempted robbery, and also under the Explosive Substances Act.
"He was arrested at a checkpost on the slope of the Panchghariya Kandi Notun Bridge on the Munshirhat-bound road near the city at around 1:00am," reads the police press statement.
The press statement also says that Mizi and two others tried to hijack an autorickshaw, but the other couldn't be caught and fled the scene.
When asked about this, Munshiganj District Jubo Dal convener Mujibar Dewan Babu confirmed Mizi's position as a member of the convening committee of Miji Sadar Upazila Jubo Dal.
"We have a clear position on any kind of crime. No act that creates panic among people can be done. If specific allegations are found, then organisational action will be taken against him," Dewan said.
