Illegal arms-making facility found in Ramu hills; large cache of equipment recovered
No arrests were made during the operation as those present fled, police said, adding that a case has been filed and efforts to identify suspects continue
Police have detected what they described as an illegal arms-making facility in a remote hilly area of Ramu in Cox's Bazar and recovered a large quantity of equipment.
The raid was carried out this morning (5 January) in the Abu Ahmadghona Fatemachhara area of Eidghar Union in Ramu upazila, said Alake Biswas, additional superintendent of police of the Special Branch and spokesperson for the Cox's Bazar district police.
However, no one could be arrested as the suspects fled after sensing the presence of law enforcers, he said.
According to police, they received information this morning that members of an organised group had set up an illegal facility to manufacture firearms in a remote hilly area of Eidghar. Following the information, a police team conducted a special operation in the area.
During the operation, police surrounded a suspicious makeshift hut built in the Abu Ahmadghona Fatemachhara hills. Sensing the presence of police, three to four suspected individuals managed to flee the scene.
Police later searched the hut and recovered two rifle cartridges, four spent cartridge cases, two gun stocks, three trigger assemblies, six gun barrels, two wooden frames used for gun-making, a saw, a hammer, a pair of pliers, and other equipment used to make weapons.
Alake Biswas said efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved in the operation of the facility, including the individuals who fled during the raid.
"A case has been filed at Ramu Police Station in connection with the incident, with police acting as the complainant," he added.
