The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested Enamur Rahman, former state minister for disaster management and relief, from the capital's Bashundhara area.

The Detective Branch of the DMP arrested the state minister earlier tonight, Deputy Commissioner (Media) Talebur Rahman said in a press statement sent to media after Sunday (26 January) midnight.

He, however, did not disclose any other details regarding the arrest.

Enamur was elected MP from the Dhaka-19 constituency (Savar) in both the 10th and 11th Jatiya Sangsad elections as an Awami League candidate. In the last 12th JS polls, he lost to independent candidate Md Saiful Islam. He served as the state minister for the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief during 2019–2024.

Following the fall of the Awami League-led government on 5 August in the face of a mass uprising, Enamur was sued in multiple murder and corruption cases.

On 23 September, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) launched an investigation against the former state minister and former Chairman of Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) Haiul Quaium on charges  of abuse of power and acquisition of wealth beyond known sources of income.

According to media reports, Enamur reportedly has around Tk6 crore in cash deposits and investments in various institutions. He has invested crores of taka in Enam Medical Hospital, Enam Education and Industrial Village, and Enam Cancer Hospital.

On 22 September, a case was filed with a Dhaka court against Enamur, ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and other top AL leaders over the killing of one Touhidur Rahman in police firing during the movement at Ashulia, on the outskirts of the capital city, on 5 August.

Earlier, on 18 September, a Dhaka court issued a travel ban on 18 former ministers and eight members of parliament (MPs), including Enamur, as part of ongoing investigations by the ACC.

The former state minister is also an accused in a case filed over the killing of Sajjad Hossain, who was shot dead in Savar, Dhaka during the student-led mass uprising on 5 August, The Business Standard reported citing Inspector (Investigation) Abdur Rashid on 19 August.

The victim's father Md Alamgir filed the case with Savar Model Police Station on 18 August night, he also said.

However, speaking to The Business Standard over the phone, plaintiff Alamgir claimed that he did not know anything about the accused in the case other than signing the case documents.

"There were many people in the police station. There were people from student organisations as well as some strangers. They were doing everything," he said.

"When I went to the police station they asked me to sign two papers. I signed and then left. I don't know anything else," he added.
