Police have arrested Mariam Mukaddas Misty, a coordinator of the Students Against Discrimination (SAD), for her alleged involvement in vandalising the house of former Tangail-8 lawmaker Zohaherul Islam.

The arrest was made on Sunday night from Tangail town, police said.

Police arrested Misty, 27, hailed from Akur Takur Para Housing area of the district town, in connection with a case filed over extortion, said Tanvir Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Tangail Sadar Police Station, today (10 March).

Later, Tangail Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Golam Mahbub Khan on Monday placed her on a four-day remand in the case after she was produced before the court, said court inspector Lutfur Rahman.

Police are also trying to arrest the others involved in the incident, said the OC.

On March 8, Misty occupied the 6-storey building of the former MP Zohaherul Islam in Chotokalibari area of the town and entered the property with 20 mentally unstable individuals.

She wanted to use the building as an asylum for them.

Later, the house was freed from occupiers during a joint forces operation on Saturday night.

Rowshan Ara Khan, wife of the former MP, filed a case with Sadar Police Station against Misty and 8/9 others.

According to the case statement, Misty looted Tk 5 lakh and 10 tolas of gold ornaments after breaking open the six lockers at the house. Besides, furniture worth Tk 50 lakh were damaged.

She in a planned way forced into the house with 17 mentally unstable people and demanded Tk 10 crore to live in the house, according to the case. She also threatened to set the house on fire if she was not paid the money within seven days.
