DU chemistry professor suspended over allegations of sexually harassing students
The committee has been requested to submit its report with recommendations within three months
Dhaka University (DU) has suspended Md Ershad Halim, a professor of the chemistry department, after a primary investigation found initial evidence supporting allegations of sexual harassment of students.
The announcement came today (8 December), in a press release by the university's public relations office, following a recent meeting of the university's highest policymaking body, the Syndicate.
According to the press release, the Syndicate meeting also formed a five-member committee to investigate the framed charges against Ershad.
The committee is headed by the principal of Sir Salimullah Medical College. Barrister Moniruzzaman, a lawyer of the Bangladesh Supreme Court, Assistant Proctor Dr Enamul Haque Sajib, and one representative of the accused have been included as members. The university's deputy registrar for investigation will serve as the member secretary.
The committee has been requested to submit its report with recommendations within three months, the press release added.
Earlier, on 14 November, police arrested Ershad Halim after a case was filed by a student who accused him of sexually abusing students over a long period.
