Convicted rapist captured in Chattogram after 21 years on the run

Md Abu Bakkar, a convicted rapist who had been on the run for 21 years, was finally apprehended by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a remote area of the Karnaphuli Tea Garden in Fatikchhari upazila of Chattogram yesterday (12 June).
The media wing of RAB-7 confirmed the arrest through a press release today.
The case dates back to July 2004, when a gang rape case was filed under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act at Fatikchhari Police Station.
After a full investigation and trial, a court sentenced Bakkar to life imprisonment with hard labour and a fine of Tk1 lakh. However, he absconded before the verdict was delivered and remained a fugitive by constantly changing his whereabouts.
Acting on a tip-off, RAB-7 launched a raid at around 12:30pm yesterday and apprehended Bakkar from a secluded part of the tea estate.
RAB-7 officials confirmed that the fugitive was handed over to Fatikchhari Police Station for further legal proceedings.
