Child found unconscious in Kushtia school building; preliminary evidence suggests sexual assault
The child is currently undergoing treatment at the Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital's gynaecology ward
An 11-year-old girl was rescued in an unconscious state from a secondary school building in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia last night (9 April), with doctors reporting preliminary evidence of sexual assault.
The child, a resident of Mirpur upazila who lives with her maternal grandparents following her parents' separation, had gone to Chhatragachha Secondary School yesterday morning to attend a farewell ceremony for the school's SSC batch of 2026.
When she did not return home after the event, her family began a search.
According to family members, they approached the school peon, Hamidul, at around 8pm to inquire about the girl. They alleged that the peon initially claimed no one was inside the school and refused to provide the keys to the building.
Growing suspicious, locals took the keys from him and entered the premises, eventually finding the girl unconscious in a room on the third floor.
The child was first rushed to the Mirpur Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to the Kushtia 250-bed General Hospital for advanced treatment as her condition deteriorated. She is currently undergoing treatment at the hospital's gynaecology ward.
Dr Hossain Imam, resident medical officer of the hospital, said the victim was admitted late at night and necessary samples were collected.
Preliminary examinations conducted this morning suggested evidence of rape, the doctor confirmed.
The child's mother stated that her daughter had gone back to the classroom after the ceremony to retrieve her bag before heading to the third floor. Upon regaining consciousness, the girl told reporters that she remembered sitting near the stairs but could not recall what happened afterward.
Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahidul Islam confirmed that police have launched an investigation and detained two school employees for questioning.
He added that the police will take formal legal action as soon as a written complaint is received.
