Businessman shot in Gulshan after reportedly refusing to pay extortion

A businessman was shot by a group of criminals in the Gulshan Lake area of the capital today (13 May) reportedly after he refused to pay an extortion demand.
Injured Shariful Alam Karim (35), a nursery owner in the area, is currently undergoing treatment at the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital in serious condition.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Camp, confirmed the incident and said a nursery businessman from the Gulshan area had been shot and is currently receiving treatment in the emergency department.
He added that the concerned police station is investigating the shooting incident.
According to Md Zahid, a relative of the injured businessman, a terrorist identified as Picchi Rubel had been demanding Tk20,000 from Shariful for the past month. When Shariful refused to comply, Rubel, accompanied by 3-4 others, intercepted him near Gulshan-1 Lake around 2:30pm today.
Zahid stated that the group stopped Shariful and reiterated their demand for money. During the ensuing altercation, they drew a pistol and shot him in the left side of his stomach.
He said Shariful sustained serious injuries and was initially taken to a local hospital. As his condition worsened, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care.
