Police have arrested a second suspect in connection with the killing of a 19-year-old garment factory worker allegedly beaten to death on charges of theft at Greenland Garments Limited in the Kashimpur Road area in Gazipur's Konabari.

The arrested, Shafiqul Islam (30), works as a security guard at the factory.

Confirming the arrest, Konabari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Salah Uddin said Shafiqul was detained last night (30 June) based on confidential information.

"We confirmed his involvement after reviewing CCTV footage. He has been sent to jail following a court appearance," he said.

The victim, Hridoy (19), was an electrical mechanic working in the dyeing section of the factory. According to the police, he was tortured sometime between 8pm on Friday (27 June), and 10am on Saturday (28 June), inside the factory premises.

The news of the murder triggered protests from workers of Greenland and nearby factories, who demanded justice and threw stones at the building. In response, factory management declared the facility closed indefinitely. Police later recovered CCTV footage from inside the factory as part of their investigation.

Hridoy hailed from Shuktarbaid area of Ghatail, Tangail. He had been living with his mother and sister in a rented house in Konabari.

Following the incident, Hridoy's brother, Liton Mia, filed a case at Konabari Police Station on Saturday at around 11pm, accusing unknown individuals of premeditated murder and concealment of the body.

The case statement said Hridoy left home for work at 8pm on 27 June and had not returned by the following afternoon. After visiting the factory the following day, the family found Hridoy had been killed. They later identified the body at the hospital morgue.

Police prepared an inquest report in the presence of his relatives and sent the body for post-mortem examination that day. That same night, police arrested Hasan Mahmud Mithun, 28, another security guard at the factory.

OC Salah Uddin stated that law enforcement teams are continuing raids to arrest the remaining suspects identified through the CCTV footage and the investigation remains ongoing.
