Actresses Meher Afroz Shaon and Sohana Saba, taken into custody by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police yesterday (6 February), have been released after extensive questioning.

They have been handed over to the members of their respective families, DB chief Rezaul Karim Mallik said in the afternoon (7 February).

Speaking about their detention, he said, "They were detained on allegations of anti-state conspiracy. They were questioned extensively. After the interrogation, they have been released into the custody of their families for the time being."

The actresses were detained on Thursday night.

"No cases have been filed against them," Mallick said earlier on the day.

Shaon, widow of late writer Humayun Ahmed, was arrested Thursday evening, just hours after her village home in Jamalpur was attacked and set on fire.

Students and locals reportedly torched the house near Norundi Railway Station in Jamalpur sadar upazila at about 6pm.
