5 BNP men sued over extorting, attacking auto drivers in Gazipur; one arrested

A case has been filed against five local leaders and activists of the BNP and its affiliated organisations for allegedly attacking auto-rickshaw drivers in Gazipur sadar upazila as they declined to pay extortion.
Of the accused, Shahidullah, general secretary of Bhawalgarh union unit Jatiyatabadi Sramik Dal, has been arrested.
Confirming the matter, Joydevpur police station OC Towhid Ahmed said the arrestee was sent to court yesterday, and efforts are ongoing to arrest others.
The other accused are – Islam Uddin, 45, Miar Uddin, Shahjahan, 46, and Sumon Mia, 25 – all residents of Baniar Chala area of Gazipur sadar upazila.
Of them, Islam is a member of the Gazipur sadar upazila BNP convening committee.
As per the case statement, the suspects have been extorting money from auto-rickshaw drivers at an auto-rickshaw stand on Bagher Bazar Safari Park Road in Gazipur sadar upazila for a long time by intimidating them.
On 11 July, three auto drivers, Delwar Hossain, 45, Rafid Mia, 16 and Rakib Sarkar, 23, were attacked with locally-made weapons when they refused to pay extortion.
Rafid was seriously injured in the incident.
On information, police rescued the injured individuals from the spot and admitted them to Shahid Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur.
Injured auto driver Delwar Hossain filed a case in this connection, naming five accused and 4-5 unnamed others.
