Police have arrested three youths for raping a woman on 16 February in a trawler at Munshiganj's Louhajang upazila.
The three individuals were arrested during a raid in an area adjacent to the Padma Bridge at around 7:30pm on Wednesday evening (19 February), said Munshiganj Superintendent of Police (SP) Muhammad Shamsul Alam Sarkar in a press release last night (20 February).
The arrestees were identified as Md Jamal Mollah, 23, Yamin Munshi, 19, and Jabbar Sheikh, 18.
Munshiganj police said the arrestees confessed to committing the crime in court yesterday under Section 164 of The Code and Criminal Procedure and were subsequently sent to jail by the court.
According to the release, the woman, 22, along with her husband, filed a written complaint at the Padma Bridge (North) Police Station, alleging that four men gang-raped her 16 February.
Based on the complaint, the police visited the scene, verified the incident, filed a case, and launched an operation to arrest the accused.
Police arrested Jamal from the banks of the Padma River on 17 February. Yamin and Jabbar were also apprehended by the police based on Jamal's confession.
The trawler has been seized and several pieces of evidence recovered, police said. The victim has also undergone a medical examination.
The investigation into the case is ongoing, and efforts to arrest the other accused, identified as Abu Bakar Siddique, 22, are continuing, said the Munshiganj SP.
