216 switchblade knives seized in Keraniganj, one arrested
SRB says the knives were stockpiled for sale to criminals and were allegedly used in robberies and killings
The Special Response Battalion (SRB-2) has seized 216 switchblade knives of different models from a house in Keraniganj, Dhaka, and arrested a man allegedly involved in stockpiling and supplying the weapons.
The arrestee is SM Robin.
The knives include 180 Eagle-model, 20 Cheetah-model, 12 Machranga-model and four Commboard-model switchblades, said Wing Commander MZM Intekhab Chowdhury, director of the SRB's law and media wing.
He disclosed this at a briefing at the SRB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar today (4 October).
He said SRB-2 received intelligence on the night of 3 October that a large number of illegal switchblade knives had been stockpiled for sale at a house in Laboni Point under Keraniganj Model Police Station.
Acting on the information, an SRB-2 team searched the house and recovered the knives. Robin, identified as the alleged stockist and supplier, was arrested during the operation.
According to the initial investigation, the knives were supplied to criminals in Dhaka and other parts of the country, who allegedly used them in robberies, killings and other crimes, the SRB official said.
He said the purchase, sale, carrying, stockpiling and use of such sharp weapons are prohibited and punishable under existing Bangladeshi law.
Legal proceedings against the arrested man and the seized items are under way, he added.
