A 16-year-old girl was reportedly gang-raped at a bazaar in Charfesson Upazila of Bhola after going there for Eid shopping.

The reported incident took place at the upazila's Shashibhushan Bazaar on Saturday evening (22 March), according to the victim and police.

The girl filed a case against three men at Shashibhushan Police Station on Sunday afternoon (23 March), confirmed Shashibhushan police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tariq Hasan Rasel to The Business Standard over the phone today (March 24).

Police have arrested one of the three accused after locals detained and handed him over. Raids are ongoing to catch the other two, he said.

He said a case has been registered based on the victim's complaint and one suspect, identified as Rafiqul Islam, has been arrested and sent to jail through the court.

"The victim has been sent to the 250-bed General Hospital in Bhola for medical examinations," added OC Tariq.

Citing the case details, he identified the other two accused as Sumon and Swadhin. All three accused are residents of Ward No 6 of Awajpur Union.

According to the case details, the girl went to the Shashibhushan Bazaar on Saturday afternoon to buy clothes for Eid. At one point, her mobile phone's battery died and she went to Sumon's shop in the bazaar to charge it. Sumon asked her to go to the back room of the shop to charge her phone.

When the girl went to the room, she alleged, Rafiqul and Swadhin entered behind her and took turns to sexually violate her. Locals, upon discovering the incident, rescued the girl and handed over Rafiqul to the police.

The other two fled before the police arrived, according to the case details.
