Teacher detained over remark on Tarique released after bail

Teacher AKM Shahidul Islam was released from Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj yesterday after a Dhaka court granted him bail, a day after the BNP issued a formal statement against his detention.
Shahidul, vice-principal of Gabtoli Technical Training Centre in Dhaka, had been arrested on 27 December for allegedly shouting derogatory remarks about BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, calling him an "extortionist" and "terrorist," during the party leader's visit to the grave of Sharif Osman Hadi. BNP leaders and activists present at the scene had detained him and handed him over to Shahbagh Police.
Following his detention, Shahidul was shown arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and sent to jail through a court order.

The party emphasised that freedom of expression is a fundamental right in a democratic society and reiterated its long-standing stance in favour of free speech and civil liberties.
The day after, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Juel Rana granted him bail after a hearing, and he was freed later in the afternoon.
