The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today (12 December) upheld a High Court verdict that had acquitted businessman Gias Uddin Al Mamun of corruption charges in a case lodged by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

The Appellate Division full bench headed by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed passed the order, allowing a review petition filed by Mamun.

"The High Court had acquitted Gias Uddin Al Mamun of the charges. The ACC filed an appeal with the Appellate Division against that verdict and the apex court after hearing the ACC plea, had ordered to hear the case afresh at the High Court. My client filed a review petition against the Appellate Division order," said Mamun's counsel Sabbir Hamza Chowdhury.

The ACC on 8 May 2007, filed the case with the Cantonment Police Station as Mamun failed to submit his wealth statement.

The anti-graft body had brought charges of amassing illegal wealth of Tk101.73 crore. On March 27, 2008, the concerned lower court convicted and sentenced Gias Uddin Al Mamun to 10 years in jail and fined him Tk10 lakh.
