Rupayan chief gets bail in Banani fire

A Dhaka court has granted bail to Rupayan Group Chairman Liakat Ali Khan Mukul in a case filed over Banani high-rise inferno.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sadbir Yeasir Arafat Chowdhury granted him the bail as the accused surrendered before the court with a bail plea on Sunday.

The court said the allegation against the accused was not “specific” and they were “victims of circumstances”.

A massive and deadly fire broke out at FR Tower – a multistorey building in Dhaka’s upscale Banani area – on March 28, claiming 26 lives and leaving 70 others injured.

Allegations arose against the land and building owners, developer Rupayan Group and Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakhya (Rajuk) for breaching building codes and neglecting fire safety while constructing the 22-storey building.

Pointing finger at the Rupayan Group, police in the case filed with Banani police station stated that the accused showed “utter negligence” to human life and property, violating building construction codes.

Previously, the owners of the land and the extended part of the building had also secured bail.
