Man sentenced to death for 2018 rape, murder of adolescent girl in Dohar

A court today (18 March) convicted and sentenced a man to death in a case lodged over the rape and subsequently murder of an adolescent girl in Dohar Upazila of Dhaka in 2018.
Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 pronounced the judgment in the absence of the convict, identified as Ziaur Rahman, as he has yet to be arrested.
The court also fined the convict Tk2 lakh.
The court ordered Dhaka district magistracy to sell movable and immovable properties of Ziaur, son of Sheikh Sona Miah of village Banaghata under Dohar Police Station, and sell those to realise the fine and give to the victim's family, Prosecutor Ershad Alam told BSS.

According to the case documents, the victim went to collect vegetables from the garden near their house at around 9am on 21 October 2018. As she was returning home after collecting vegetables, Ziaur grabbed her and took her to a nearby garden and raped her. He then cut her throat with a knife and dumped the body in the garden.
The victim's father later filed the case at Dohar Police Station. Police on 12 March 2019 filed a charge sheet against Ziaur.
The court later framed charges against the sole accused and delivered the judgment today after examining 18 witnesses on different hearing dates.
