A Dhaka court has placed five individuals on different terms of remand over their suspected link to mugging foreign currencies, including 5 lakh Saudi Riyals, in the capital's Tejgaon Industrial area.

One suspect has been sent to jail.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Israt Jahan Jennifer passed the order following a hearing today (5 July).

Accused Md Abdullah Al Mamun (25), Md Zahidul Islam alias Sohag (26), Md Joy Hasan (23), and Md Bijoy (20) were each placed on three-day remand, while Md Sabbir Hossain (22) was granted a four-day remand. Md Aryan (20) was sent to jail.

According to court sources, Sub-Inspector Ruhul Amin of Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station, the investigation officer in the case, had sought a 10-day remand for each accused.

Defense lawyers opposed the remand petitions and sought bail, including a separate plea for Aryan on the grounds that he is a minor. After the hearing, the court approved the remands and denied the bail applications.

The arrests were made following a joint operation by the Detective Branch (DB) and Tejgaon Industrial Area police over the past four days in various parts of Dhaka, confirmed Sub-Inspector Iqbal Hossain of the court's DC Prosecution Division.

The robbery occurred around 6:30pm on 1 July in front of the passenger shed near the Central Medical Store Depot (CMSD), adjacent to Tejgaon Polytechnic Institute. A group of 10–12 masked individuals, armed with local weapons, intercepted a private car belonging to MM Ayat Tours and Travels and looted approximately 491,500 Saudi Riyals, 400 Omani Rials, 30 Kuwaiti Dinars, and 12,350 UAE Dirhams—equivalent to around Tk1.64 crore.

Police said the heist was pre-planned by an employee of the company, Tuhin, along with accomplices. Tuhin allegedly shared his live location with the group via WhatsApp while en route to Uttara in an Uber ride-share. Upon arrival at the targeted location, the gang intercepted the vehicle and fled with the luggage containing the currency.

The law enforcers later recovered the stolen foreign currency and seized three motorcycles used in the robbery.

A case has been filed at Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station in connection with the incident.
