Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has said that they have received the copy of the verdict against Lakshmipur-2 MP Shahid Islam Papul who has been convicted on charges of human trafficking and money laundering in Kuwait.

He said copies of the verdict have been sent to the Speaker and the home ministry. They will take action as per the law.

The foreign minister disclosed the information while responding to reporters' questions at a function at the capital's Purbachal Club on Friday.

In response to a question, he said that the parliament will now decide what action will be taken against Papul. The Parliament will decide whether his post of MP will be canceled or not.

The foreign minister said, "Papul could appeal within a month. He went to Kuwait as a businessman, not as a Member of Parliament. He did not ask us for any legal help from us. The Bangladesh government is not giving him any legal help."

Mentionable, Kuwait police arrested Shahid Islam Papul, an independent MP from Laxkshmipur-2 constituency, on 6 June last year on charges of human trafficking and money laundering. Since then, he has been imprisoned in that country. After six months of trial, on 28 January, a Kuwaiti criminal court sentenced Papul to four years rigorous imprisonment.

The foreign minister said he had not received any positive assurance from Myanmar's new government on the Rohingya issue.

Inaugurating the two-day 'WE Colorful Fest', organised by Women and E Commerce Forum (WE) at the Purbachal Club, the foreign minister said women are moving fast on digital platforms today. Women did not stop even during the Covid pandemic.

At the event, State Minister for ICT Junaid Ahmed Palak said Sheikh Hasina's leadership has been able to implement Digital Bangladesh in the last 12 years. E-commerce has adopted a plan to create employment to five lakh women by 2025.

He assured of all kinds of cooperation in creating women entrepreneurs.

Among others, the programme was also attended by Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Vikram Doraiswami and Nasima Akter Nisha, president of Women and E-Commerce Forum.
