Lakshmipur AL leader seeks bail reinstatement in July Uprising killings case
Tribunal seeks medical and charge reports within 15 days.
A Lakshmipur leader of the banned Awami League has sought reinstatement of his bail in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of five people, including a student, during the July-August mass uprising.
The International Crimes Tribunal-2 directed the submission of two reports within 15 days during a hearing today (19 April).
Humayun Kabir Patowari, president of Lakshmipur Sadar upazila Awami League, filed the plea through his lawyer Abdul Kaiyum before the three-member tribunal led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury.
The tribunal asked the prosecution to submit a report detailing the allegations against the accused and directed the head of the haematology department at Bangladesh Medical University to provide a medical report on his condition.
The tribunal had earlier set today for the submission of the investigation report. However, following a prosecution plea, it extended the deadline by two months to 21 June.
During the hearing, the defence sought bail reinstatement on health grounds, saying the accused is suffering from liver cirrhosis and is currently vomiting blood.
The chief prosecutor told the tribunal that the report on charges would be submitted within one month, adding that the accused is receiving treatment in custody without negligence.
The defence said the matter is serious, and the accused requires advanced treatment, adding that the medical report could be prepared within a week if authorities act promptly.
After hearing both sides, the tribunal granted 15 days to submit the two reports and fixed 4 May for the next hearing.
Speaking to reporters, lawyer Abdul Kaiyum said the defence sought the withdrawal of the suspension of bail and its reinstatement. He added that the tribunal has asked for a medical report to confirm whether his client is suffering from liver cirrhosis, alongside the prosecution's report.
Earlier, on 2 March, the tribunal rejected Humayun Kabir's bail. The same court had granted him conditional bail on 11 January, but he was not released due to other pending cases.
Other accused in the case include Dighali Union Parishad Chairman Salah Uddin Javed and district Chhatra League organising secretary Shaheen Alam, who were produced before the tribunal today.
