Keraniganj madrasah blast: Six accused placed on remand

A Dhaka court today (28 December) placed six people arrested in connection with a devastating blast at a madrasah in South Keraniganj on different terms of remand.
Dhaka Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Mahbubur Rahman passed the order as police produced the accused in the court.
The remanded accused are Shahin alias Abu Bakkar, Aminur alias Dorji Amin, Shafian Rahman Fakir, Asia Begum, Yasmin Akter and Asmani Khatun.
Of them, Shahin, Aminur and Shafian were placed on seven-day remand each, while Asia, Yasmin and Asmani were placed on three-day remand each.
The explosion occurred around 11am on Friday (26 December) at Ummal Quran International Madrasah in the Hasnabad area of South Keraniganj, leaving four people injured.
Police recovered cocktails and other explosive materials from the site.
Police today filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act in this connection.
According to police records, the madrasa had been operated since 2022 by Al Amin Sheikh, alias Rajib, and his wife, Asiya Begum, after it was handed over to them by Mufti Harun, who had previously run the institution. The building has four rooms, two of which were used for madrasah activities, while the remaining two were used as living quarters by Al Amin and his family.
Police said the main suspect, Al Amin Sheikh, had previously been arrested in 2017 in Narayanganj under the Anti-Terrorism Act and was also named in another case in Bagerhat. According to police records, a total of seven cases have been filed against him in different police stations across the country.
